Destination focus: UAE

The UAE has become a rising star on the Russian outbound travel industry over the past couple of years.

In 2018, 941,000 Russian tourists visited the UAE, 23% more than in 2017.

This reflects the overall trend over the past few years, with 206,000 Russian tourists travelling to the UAE in 2015 to 941,000 in 2018. That’s a staggering 356% growth in three years.

The abolition of visas for Russian tourists that came into effect in July 2018, is sure to have an affect on future prospects for attracting more Russian tourists.

With its bright lights, high-end shopping opportunities, and impressive architecture, Dubai is the definitive hotspot for Russian tourists.

Russia become the fastest growing source market for Dubai in 2018, showing a 49% increase, according to the Dubai Tourism Department. It rose from tenth to seventh place in the list of key source markets.

More flight routes set to open, Pobeda’s new Moscow-Dubai route for example, there’s plenty of scope for even more growth.

Other Emirates are also experiencing high demand from Russian tourists, with Abu-Dhabi seeing a 98% rise in 2017, and that’s expected to rise a further 38% by 2020, according to the organisers of the Arabian Travel Market.

In 2019, Russian tourists have not been put off by the summer heat, showing a 60% rise in visitor numbers compared to the previous summer.

It’s clear Russian tourists’ demand for travelling to the UAE is not slowing down; we could well be seeing even stronger numbers over the next few years.
