Basic facts about Russia:
Location
Russia is an incredibly large country and it expands over much of Eurasia and Northern Asia and some of Western Europe. It is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean, and shares land borders with many countries. The geographical coordinates for Russia are 60 00 N, 100 00 E. Moscow is the capital city.
Climate
The climate in Russia is varied due to the different geographical regions in the area. Generally speaking, the winters vary from cool to frigid while the summers range from humid to cool.
Moscow is a temperate region, with warm-to-hot and humid summers and winters comparable to other Northern European cities. The coldest months are January-February (-15-9°C). July and August are very hot and humid, with temperatures reaching +30°C or higher.
Time
Moscow and St. Petersburg are GMT+3.
Language
The main language in the country is Russian, but there are a lot of other minority languages, which are spoken in different regions. English is relatively widely used.
People
Russia has a population of roughly 143,420,309 (July 2005). Of these, 79.8% are Russian, 3.8% are Tatar, 2% are Ukrainian, 1.2% are Bashkir and 1.1% are Chuvash. A further 12.1% do not fit into any of these ethnic groups (2002 census). The majority of people are Russian Orthodox, while there is a minority of Muslim adherents in the country. Other religions are also practiced.
Currency
The official Russian currency is the Russian rouble. The currency code for the rouble is RUR. The rouble has a comparatively low value against other currencies.
Transport
The main forms of transport in Russia are railways, motorways and waterways. Most major cities have either international or national airports. Heliports are also available. Pipelines and harbours are used for the transportation of raw materials and refined products.
Visa and Passport Information
Visas and passports are required by all visitors to Russia. There are two popular types of Russian visa – the ‘tourist visa’ and the ‘business visa’. In most cases a tourist visa should be satisfactory — unless you are planning to be in Russia for longer than 30 days. In this case, you should apply for a business visa.
Three month tourist visas do not exist anymore. If you need to stay in Russia for longer than 30 days, the only option is to get a business visa. Business visas are valid for up to 12 months. A Russian business visa should be issued to people who are going to Russia for business purposes, but because this type of visa allows a person to stay for longer and enter the country more than once, it is also used by ordinary travellers who need more flexibility.
